Before starting a web site it is important to know, what your site is going to be about. Is it going to be informational or promoting something. What is the appearance of your site going to be. This may sound stupid to say, but many people start a web site before doing any research, or without knowing what appearance they really want. A well laid out plan will save you alot of time when it comes time to start your site.
Once one figures out what their web site is going to be about, or product you are going to promote. The first thing you should examine are other sites that are already on the internet. Check their designs and the content they are offering, then see how you can improve on what is already being offered or already working. I will generally check the top 10 sites in that category.
Next you should decide what your site is going to look like, I suggest you draw out a mock site on paper first. Or use a program like Adobe Photoshop, Corell, or any other image software you have, you can even use Microsoft Word. Make a mock site in images to see what your site will look like, once you are satisfied with your layout it is now time to start adding the code.
Remember your web site should consist of a Home page, this is the first thing people see when they visit your site. This is probably the most important page in your web designing process.
As a rule you will only have 10 seconds to capture your visitor So make it count!
This page also needs to have very “Relevant Original” content to the subject or product you are promoting. Do not just copy and paste other peoples content on your pages without their permission!
You also need a Contact page, where or how can your visitor contact you if they need more information, or possibly want to buy a product from your site. A contact page assures people that you are legitimate and are not just scamming them.
Another important page that people forget to include is a Site-map or a links page. This is nothing more than a single page with links to your other pages.
A standard Web Site should consist of no less than 5 pages.
